The Biggest Emerald Mined In Zambia
The biggest emerald mined in Zambia is known as the "Inkalamu" or "Lion Emerald." It was discovered in October 2018 at the Kagem emerald mine, which is located in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. The Inkalamu emerald weighed approximately 5,655 carats (about 1.13 kg or 2.5 lbs) in its rough form. It is a remarkable specimen with a vibrant green color and exceptional clarity.
The Inkalamu emerald was later cut into smaller gemstones, resulting in 20 individual stones that ranged in size from 11 to 1,111 carats. These individual gemstones were then named the "Inkalamu Collection" or "Pride of Inkalamu." The largest cut emerald from the Inkalamu Collection, named the "Inkalamu Star" or "Lion's Eye," weighs 1,111 carats and exhibits excellent transparency and color.
The discovery of the Inkalamu emerald and subsequent cutting of the Inkalamu Collection brought significant attention to Zambia's emerald mining industry and showcased the country's potential as a source of high-quality emeralds.
