Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu has announced plans to push for the regulation of the hauling services industry in Zambia, a move aimed at addressing the concerns of Yango operators and other stakeholders in the sector.

In a statement posted on social media, Mpundu revealed that he and Kamfinsa MP Hon. Christopher Kang’ombe have formally requested the Speaker of Parliament to allow them to move a motion urging the government to regulate the industry. He emphasized that regulation would create a fair environment for all players, ensuring a win-win situation for operators, service providers, and the government.

“We have listened a lot to your misgivings and how you have been treated badly with no one to help you out,” Mpundu said. “Well, Hon. Christopher Kang’ombe and I have requested the Speaker to allow us to move a motion to urge government to regulate the hauling services industry. That way, we all can have a win-win situation.”

He further urged Yango operators to organize themselves and appoint representatives to help present their case effectively before Parliament. According to Mpundu, structured engagement with lawmakers will strengthen the case for industry regulation and help persuade decision-makers to take action.

“The next thing is that you now need to organize yourselves. If you have representatives, come, we sit down and put together perfect arguments to convince the members of Parliament and government to agree to regulating the industry,” he added.

The Nkana MP stated that this process would also help reveal which leaders stand with Yango operators in their quest for fair treatment and better working conditions. He reassured them that his duty is to serve and create an environment where their businesses can thrive.

The call for regulation comes amid growing concerns from drivers and operators over unfair practices and lack of government oversight in the industry. Many drivers have complained about low fares, unfair commissions, and poor working conditions, issues that MPs Mpundu and Kang’ombe believe can be addressed through proper regulation.
