DEC Dismantles Illicit Cannabis Cultivation Networks in North-Western and Northern Provinces

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has intensified its crackdown on illegal drug activities, leading to the dismantling of cannabis cultivation networks in North-Western and Northern Provinces.
In a series of operations, DEC officers uncovered substantial amounts of illegally cultivated cannabis, resulting in multiple arrests and drug seizures.
In Solwezi, North-Western Province, DEC officers apprehended Nelson Masamo, a 32-year-old peasant farmer, for unlawfully cultivating 1.03 tonnes of cannabis plants. In a separate case, Ezinani Mwangama (61) was arrested for cultivating 665 kilograms of cannabis. Additionally, Justin Muchindu (20) and Pythias Kaloza (31), both residents of Mukuba area, were jointly arrested for cultivating 138.2 kilograms of cannabis plants.
In Luwingu, Northern Province, DEC conducted targeted operations, leading to the seizure of 951 kilograms of cannabis. Arrests made in connection with these illicit activities include:
- John Bwalya (33) – 309 kg
- Sydney Kabwe (46) – 242 kg
- Edward Mukuka (37) – 218 kg
- Titus Sampa (33) – 182 kg
In Kasama, also in Northern Province, DEC arrested Joshua Chileshe (26) and Francis Chileshe (23) for trafficking 554 sachets of high-grade cannabis weighing 1.3 kg, along with 171 grams of cannabis seeds.
All seized drugs have been taken into custody as exhibits, and the arrested individuals are awaiting court appearances. The DEC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
“The Commission remains committed to ensuring the professional discharge of its mandate as provided by law. We appreciate the support and cooperation of stakeholders and the public in these investigations,” said Allan Tamba, DEC’s Public Relations Officer.
Authorities continue to call on citizens to assist law enforcement by reporting illicit drug activities, emphasizing the collective responsibility in combating drug-related crimes across Zambia.
